About Maria Hakewill

Maria Catherine Browne was born in the late 1700s. She later married an architect named James Hakewill. Together, they traveled to Italy and lived there for two years, from 1816 to 1817.

Maria was also a writer. She published a novel called Coelebs Suited; or, The Stanley Letters in 1812.

Maria's Paintings

As an artist, Maria Hakewill was known for her oil paintings. She created many portraits of people and also painted different scenes. Her artwork was shown in some very important art exhibitions in Britain. These included the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Society of British Artists. She exhibited her paintings for many years, from 1808 to 1838.

Maria C. Hakewill passed away in Calais in 1842. She had several sons who also became painters, including Henry James, Richard Whitworth, Arthur William, and Frederick Charles.
