Maria Cotescu (born in 1896, died in 1980) was a very important Romanian architect. She was one of the first women in Romania to become an architect! Maria Cotescu was famous for designing big buildings, especially for factories and offices. She also wrote about her ideas on how buildings should be designed.
About Maria Cotescu
Maria Cotescu was born in Romania in 1896. Her mother was Maria Tufelcică, and her father was Dumitru Cotescu. He was a general in the Romanian Army during World War I.
Maria Cotescu finished high school for architecture in Bucharest in 1922. In 1924, she joined the Romanian Architects Society. She was one of only six women allowed to join at that time! Other women who joined were Irineu Maria Friedman, Virginia Andreescu Haret, Maria Hogas, Antonetta Ioanovici, and Ada Zăgănescu. Some people say she also studied at the Superior School of Architecture in Bucharest later on.
Her Main Projects
Maria Cotescu designed many buildings between World War I and World War II. She often worked on large industrial buildings.
One of her projects was the 1400 Altitude Hotel in Sinaia. She worked on this hotel from 1931 to 1933 with another architect, Ilie Teodorescu.
She also designed many buildings for the Romanian Railway Company (CFR). This big project started in 1933 and took several years to finish. It included:
- The Griviţa workshops
- CFR offices
- A power plant
- An administration building
The Griviţa building was special. It was one of the first buildings to use red brick in a modern style. It also used new technology for its purpose. This made it a great example for other architects to follow. Alexandru Tănăsescu worked with her on these buildings, which were built between 1933 and 1940.
Writing About Architecture
Besides designing buildings, Maria Cotescu also wrote articles. She shared her ideas about architectural theory. Her articles appeared in magazines like Technology Magazine (Revista Tehnica) and Architecture (Arhitectura).
Maria Cotescu passed away in Romania in 1980.
