Biography

Early Life and Education

Maria Virginia Andreescu was born on June 21, 1894, in Bucharest, Romania. Her uncle was the famous painter Ion Andreescu. When Virginia was only nine years old, her mother passed away. Virginia then took on the big responsibility of helping to raise her three younger brothers and sisters.

In 1912, she finished high school at Liceul Mihai Viteazul. After that, she decided to study architecture at the Superior School of Architecture. She was the first woman ever to study there! In 1919, she graduated with the highest honors, earning the award "very good."

While studying architecture, Virginia also attended the Academy of Fine Arts. There, she learned from a teacher named Ipolit Strâmbu. In 1920, her teacher organized an art show featuring 66 of Virginia's works. These included drawings, sketches, and watercolors. People really liked her art, and the Historical Monuments Commission bought 28 of her pieces to display permanently.

Travels and Career

In 1922, Virginia went on a study trip to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes to learn about their architecture. She wrote a report about her trip, which was published in a magazine called Fine Arts.

Using the money she earned from selling her artwork, Virginia then traveled to Italy. She wanted to learn even more about architecture in Rome. She studied there for about a year and a half with Professor Gr. Bargelini. She also worked with archaeologists to understand old building methods. A popular art style at the time, called Novecento Italiano, influenced her later designs.

Virginia returned to Romania in 1923. She started working at the Ministry of Technical Education, where she stayed until she retired in 1947. In 1928, she married Spiru I. Haret, who was the nephew of the famous engineer and mathematician Spiru C. Haret. They had one son, Radu, who later became an engineer.

Major Achievements

Virginia built most of her amazing projects between the two World Wars. She designed many different types of buildings, including:

  • The Gheorghe Şincai High School (1924-1928)
  • A part of the Cantemir Vodă National College (1926-1929)
  • The Govora Casino (1928-1929)

She also designed many private homes, monuments, and other public and private buildings. Her style was very diverse, covering all the different Romanian architectural styles from the early 20th century. Her own home was built in the Art Deco style, which she seemed to really like.

After designing about 40 buildings, Virginia became the Romanian Architectural Inspector General. She was the first woman to ever hold this important position! She represented Romania at many international meetings and conferences, including architecture congresses in Brussels, Moscow, Paris, and Rome. She also won many awards for her designs. Besides building, she also helped write a four-volume history of architecture with Nicolae Ghica-Budești, which included her own beautiful watercolors.

Virginia Andreescu Haret passed away on May 6, 1962, in Bucharest.
