Early Life and Education
Ion Andreescu's parents were Andrei Dobrescu and Anastasia Pencovico. We don't know for sure if he was born in Bucharest or nearby. His father sold drinks and owned an inn.
Ion went to school at home with a private teacher named Andreas Apostolas. In 1863, he attended the Lazar Middle School in Bucharest. Later, he went to Sfantul Sava High School. While at Sfantul Sava, he won first prize in an art contest!
In 1869, Andreescu left high school. He began studying at the "National School of Fine Arts." This school is now called the Bucharest National University of Arts. There, he learned about drawing lines and beautiful handwriting, which is called Calligraphy.
Teaching and Artistic Growth
By 1872, Ion Andreescu became a teacher himself. He taught drawing and calligraphy at the Bishop's School in Buzău. The next year, in 1873, he moved to teach at the Tudor Vladimirescu Communal Secondary School, also in Buzău. Then, in 1875, he taught at Buzău's Craftsmanship School.
Journey to Paris
A famous Romanian painter named Nicolae Grigorescu inspired Ion Andreescu. Because of this, Andreescu decided to go to Paris, France, to learn even more about art.
In Paris, he joined a private art school called Académie Julian. At the same time, his paintings were accepted into the famous Salon (Paris) art show. He showed two paintings there: "Start of Spring" and "The Fair in Romania."
Painting in Nature
After Paris, Andreescu moved to a place called Barbizon. This area was famous for artists who painted outdoors, directly from nature. This style is called "plein-air" painting. He became very good at it. In Barbizon, he worked alongside other well-known artists. These included Nicolae Grigorescu, Alexandru Djuvara, Corot, Millet, and even Monet.
His artwork was shown with paintings by other famous artists of his time. These included Manet, Monet, and Renoir.
Return to Romania
In 1881, Ion Andreescu returned to Romania. Sadly, he was very sick with tuberculosis. He passed away shortly after, in 1882. Even though he lived a short life, he left behind many beautiful and important paintings.
