Maria Deijfen facts for kids
Maria Deijfen (born in 1975) is a Swedish mathematician. She is well-known for her studies on how things spread on networks, like how diseases spread in a community. She also researches random graphs, which are like maps showing connections between different points. Maria Deijfen is currently a professor of mathematics at Stockholm University in Sweden.
Becoming a Mathematician
Maria Deijfen studied at Stockholm University. She earned her first advanced degree in 2001. Later, she completed her doctorate degree in 2004. This is like getting a PhD, which is the highest university degree. Her special research for her doctorate was about "Stochastic Models for Spatial Growth and Competition." This means she studied mathematical ways to understand how things grow and compete in different spaces.
After finishing her doctorate, Maria Deijfen worked as a researcher at several universities. She worked at the Mittag-Leffler Institute, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Chalmers University, and Delft University of Technology. In 2006, she returned to Stockholm University. She became a full professor of mathematical statistics in 2015.
Awards and Special Work
In 2018, Maria Deijfen received a special award called the Paul R. Halmos – Lester R. Ford Award. This award comes from the Mathematical Association of America. She won it for a paper she wrote with two other mathematicians, Alexander E. Holroyd and James B. Martin.
Their paper was titled "Friendly Frogs, Stable Marriage, and the Magic of Invariance." In this work, they used a type of math called combinatorial game theory. This helps them understand games and puzzles. They used it to study the stable marriage problem, which is about finding the best way to pair people up so everyone is happy with their match.
