Early Life and Family

Maria Olga de Moraes Sarmento da Silveira was born in Setúbal, Portugal, on May 26, 1881. Her family had a military background. She spent some of her childhood in Elvas, where she became good friends with Virgínia Quaresma. When she was 16, she married a Navy doctor. Sadly, he died soon after in a battle in Angola.

Her Work and Activism

Olga Sarmento joined a group of smart people in Portugal in the early 1900s. They worked hard to gain equal rights for everyone, especially for women. This included fighting for women's legal and political rights.

She took over from Ana de Castro Osório as the main editor of a magazine called Sociedade Futura, which started in 1902. Olga was also involved with the Liga Portuguesa da Paz (Portuguese League of Peace). She helped start this group and became the president of its section for women's rights in 1906.

On May 18, 1906, Olga gave a speech about "Problema Feminista" (The Feminist Problem) in Lisbon. She also traveled to South America, giving talks in Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. While in Brazil, she met and became friends with the famous writer Júlia Lopes de Almeida.

Her Life and Legacy

During the First World War, Olga Sarmento lived in Paris. For over 30 years, she was a close friend and partner to Baroness Hélène van Zuylen. Olga helped the Baroness escape danger during a difficult time by taking her to Lisbon and then to New York City. She also spent time writing down the Baroness's life story.

Olga had a special connection to her hometown, Setúbal. She left all her belongings to the city when she passed away. This included her personal library and a huge collection of autographs from famous artists, musicians, and writers. These special items are now part of the collection at the Museu de Setúbal/Convento de Jesus. Olga passed away in Lisbon on October 17, 1948.
