Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Maria Rogers Oral History Program, often called MROHP, collects and saves spoken stories about Boulder County. It started in 1976 with a few interviews. Now, it has over 1600 interviews! You can find these stories online. You can also listen to them at the Boulder Public Library's Carnegie Branch Library.

Who Was Maria Rogers?

The Oral History Program is named after Maria M. Rogers. She led and grew the program for over twelve years. Maria worked on it from 1985 to 1997. She used hundreds of interviews for her book. Her book, In Other Words: Oral Histories of the Colorado Frontier, shares personal stories. It tells about the early settlers and pioneers of Colorado.

What's in the Collection?

The Maria Rogers Oral History Program Collection is huge. As of 2010, it had over 1,650 interviews. Each year, 40 to 100 new interviews are added. Many volunteers help record and save these stories. Other groups and people also donate interviews.

The interviews cover all parts of life in Boulder County. They give a detailed look at daily life and big events. You can hear from many different people. This includes pioneers, farmers, and even university professors. Coal miners, teachers, and artists also share their stories.

Even though the interviews are about Boulder County, they cover many interesting topics. These include city planning and open spaces. You can learn about political activism and mountaineering. There are also stories about important issues like nuclear waste.

How Can You Explore These Stories?

The Rogers family and the Boulder Library Foundation helped a lot. Their donations made it possible to put all interviews online. This digital archive is linked to the Boulder Public Library's catalog. You can easily search for names, places, or keywords. Check it out here: [1].

The collection is kept at the Carnegie Library for Local History. This library is a branch of the Boulder Public Library. It is located at 1125 Pine Street in Boulder, Colorado.
