Early Life and Education
Maria Teresa Ferrer i Mallol was born in Barcelona, Spain, on August 25, 1940. She went to the University of Barcelona. In 1963, she earned a degree in philosophy. Later, in 1984, she completed her PhD at the same university.
What She Studied
Maria Teresa Ferrer i Mallol worked as a historian from 1963 to 2011. Her main focus was on the history of Catalonia in the 14th and 15th centuries. She was especially interested in how people traded goods and managed their money during those times.
She also studied the different groups of people living in Catalonia and Valencia in the 14th century. These groups included Mudéjar Muslims, Jewish people, and Christians. She believed that these communities were able to live together because they were kept separate based on their religions. She thought this separation and unfair treatment were forced upon the Mudéjar community.
Her Career Journey
In 1972, Maria Teresa Ferrer i Mallol started working at the Institut Milà i Fontanals
(IMF). At first, she was a Scientific Assistant for Emilio Sáez .From 1981 to 1984, she also helped create the Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana for the Generalitat de Catalunya. Another historian, Regina Sáinz de la Maza , worked as her assistant at the IMF from 1985 to 1994.
In 1991, a fellow historian named Josep Trenchs
gave Ferrer i Mallol his last work. He wanted her to publish it after he passed away.From 1992 to 2014, she was a member of the history and archaeology department at the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC). She held important roles there:
- Secretary from 1995 to 2001
- Vice-president from 2001 to 2006
- President from 2006 to 2014
Ferrer i Mallol also wrote for the Anuario de Estudios MedievalesUniversity of Leeds on parts of the International Medieval Bibliography. She also reviewed a historical book called The Four Great Chronicles , which was written by Ferran Soldevila .
. She worked with theIn 1993, she joined the Spanish Society of Medieval Studies. By 2002, she became a Professor of Research at the IMF.
After she retired in 2011, the IMF honored her. They created a special book called La Corona catalanoaragonesa, l'Islam i el món mediterrani. Estudis d'història medieval en homenatge a la doctora Maria Teresa Ferrer i Mallol. This means The Catalan-Aragonese Crown, Islam and the Mediterranean World: Studies in Medieval History in Honour of Dr Maria Teresa Ferrer i Mallol.
Her Death and Legacy
Maria Teresa Ferrer i Mallol passed away in 2017. After her death, Josep Massot i Muntaner, who was the president of the history and archaeology department at the IEC, spoke about her. He said she was "a great historian, highly distinguished and productive". He also said she left "an important intellectual legacy" that they would continue to support.
In 2017, she was given the Ferran Soldevila Prize after her death. This award recognized her important work in medieval history.
