About Maria Teschler-Nicola
Early Life and Education
Maria Teschler-Nicola finished her high school exams, called Matura, in 1970. From 1971 to 1976, she studied at the University of Vienna. She focused on human biology, medicine, and folkloristics. Folkloristics is the study of traditional stories and customs. She earned her Ph.D. degree in human biology. A Ph.D. is a very high university degree.
Her Career Path
From 1970 to 1972, Maria Teschler-Nicola worked as a researcher. She was at the Institute for Forensic Medicine at the University of Vienna. After that, until 1976, she was an assistant professor. She taught at the Institute of Human Biology at the same university.
In 1993, she received her Venia Legendi for human biology. This special qualification allows a person to teach at a university. In 1997, she became an interim director for a department. Then, in 1998, she became the full director. She led the Department of Archaeological Biology and Anthropology. This department is part of the Museum of Natural History of Vienna.
In 2000, the Austrian president, Thomas Klestil, made her an extraordinary university professor. This is a very important title.
