Her Early Life and Music Journey
Maria del Mar Bonet first studied ceramics at an art school. However, she soon realized her true passion was music. In 1967, she moved to Barcelona. There, she started singing with a group called Els Setze Jutges.
She released many folk music albums in Catalan. This was a brave thing to do because, at that time, the government did not allow the Catalan language or its music. Maria del Mar Bonet has performed all over the world. She has sung in countries like China, Japan, France, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and the United States.
Making Music and Winning Awards
In 1981, Maria del Mar Bonet recorded her album Jardí Tancat in Paris. She worked with talented musicians like Jacques Denjean and the harpist Alan Stivell. She also collaborated with the Ensemble of Music Traditionelle di Tunis and Brazilian musician Milton Nascimento.
Maria del Mar Bonet has received many important awards. She won the French Charles Cross Academy Prize. She also received the Creu de Sant Jordi and the National Prize from the Catalan government. In 1985, she recorded Anells d’aigua (Rings of Water). For this album, she worked with the Ensemble de Musique Traditionelle of Tunisia. They even toured together in France and Spain.
In 1998, she toured again and worked with other well-known Spanish artists. These included Amancio Prada and Loquillo. In 2001, she released a tribute album for Jackson Browne. This album was recorded live in Barcelona and won the 2002 Spanish World Music Awards.
