Maria of Naples facts for kids
Maria of Anjou (born 1290 – died 1346 or 1347) was a princess from a powerful European family called the Capetian House of Anjou. She became the Queen of Majorca when she married King Sancho of Majorca. Maria was the daughter of King Charles II of Naples and his wife, Mary of Hungary.
Maria married King Sancho in a special ceremony called a proxy marriage on September 20, 1304. This means someone stood in for her husband during the ceremony. They had another ceremony in person in 1308. Sadly, Maria and Sancho did not have any children. This was a big problem because it meant there was no direct heir to take over the kingdom of Majorca after Sancho. To keep his kingdom independent and prevent it from being taken over by the powerful Crown of Aragon, King Sancho decided to leave his kingdom to his nephew, James. King Sancho passed away in 1324.
Maria's Later Life
Two years after King Sancho's death, Maria married again. Her second husband was James of Ejerica, who was part of the House of Barcelona family. In 1331, Maria was held in Jerica by King Alfonso IV of Aragon. Later, she was moved to Valencia.
Her brother, King Robert of Naples, worked to get her released. After June 1337, Maria left Valencia and moved to Barjols in Provence. Maria died without having any children in either 1346 or 1347.
