Marian X, born Marian Mae Hammonds in 1944, is an American playwright. A playwright is someone who writes plays for the theater.
About Marian X
Marian X was born in Trenton, New Jersey. She and her sister grew up mostly with their father in Baltimore. After a difficult event where her father's business was destroyed, she and her sister lived with foster parents for a time. She attended a high school where students of different backgrounds learned together. Later, she studied English at Morgan State University.
She got married and had two children. After raising her children, she went back to school to earn a special degree in theater from Villanova University. This is when she began to write plays.
Her 1987 play, Wet Carpets, was a funny play with music. It was about three women who grew up like sisters and faced new challenges in their lives. The Crossroads Theatre Company chose Wet Carpets to be the very first play in their New Play Rites series in 1988.
Her Plays
Marian X has written several plays that have been performed in different theaters. Here are some of her well-known works:
- Idella. This play was first performed in Villanova, Pennsylvania, in 1983.
- Wet Carpets. It was first shown at the Theatre Center in Philadelphia in 1987.
- The Mayor's Wife. This play also premiered at the Theatre Center in Philadelphia in 1990.
- Warrior Stance (or ..., A Comedy). This play was first performed at the Penumbra Theatre Workshop in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1992.
- The Screened-in Porch. This play had its first performance at the Philadelphia Dramatists Center in Philadelphia in 1994.
Awards and Recognition
In 1997, Marian X received a special award called a fellowship from Pew Charitable Trusts. This award helps artists and writers continue their important work.
