Mariano Nicolás González is a former professional footballer from Argentina. He was born on May 5, 1981. Mariano played as an attacking midfielder or a winger during his career. He was known for his skills in the middle of the field and on the sides.

Playing Career Highlights

Mariano González started his football journey in his hometown of Tandil, Argentina. He joined Racing Club de Avellaneda when he was 17 years old. Before that, he played for Club Atlético Independiente.

Early Days at Racing Club

Mariano made his professional debut at Racing Club when he was 21. He played in 64 matches in the Primera División Argentina, which is Argentina's top football league. A memorable moment was when he scored the winning goal in a 4–3 game against Boca Juniors.

Moving to Italy and Portugal

In 2004, Mariano moved to Italy to play for U.S. Città di Palermo in Serie A. He played regularly for two seasons there. In the 2006–2007 season, he was loaned to Inter Milan, a very famous Italian club. However, it was hard for him to get a starting spot because of other great players like Luís Figo.

After his time at Inter, Palermo loaned him to FC Porto in Portugal in 2007. Porto later bought him permanently for about €3.25 million. He became a more important player for Porto. He even scored a last-minute goal against Manchester United in the 2008–09 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, making the score 2–2.

Mariano was a key part of Porto's team that won the Primeira Liga (Portugal's top league) two times in a row. He also won the league once while he was on loan there. After the 2010–2011 season, he left Porto and joined Estudiantes de La Plata in Argentina.

Later Club Teams

After playing for Estudiantes, Mariano continued his career in Argentina. He played for several other clubs, including Arsenal de Sarandí, Club y Biblioteca Ramón Santamarina, Club Atlético Huracán, and Club Atlético Colón. He returned to Santamarina for his final years as a player, retiring in 2022.

International Appearances

Mariano González also played for the Argentina national football team. He earned his first cap (played his first game) and scored his only goal for Argentina in 2003 against Honduras.

In 2004, he was part of the Argentina team that finished second in the 2004 Copa América. That same year, he played for the Argentina Olympic football team at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. The team won the gold medal, which was a huge achievement!

Becoming a Manager

After his playing career, Mariano González started coaching. On April 1, 2022, he was named the interim manager for Club y Biblioteca Ramón Santamarina. This was the same club he was still playing for at the time. He managed the team for 12 games, with five draws and seven losses, before a new manager took over in June 2022.

Mariano has a younger brother named Pablo Andrés González. Pablo was also a professional footballer. He played as a striker and also started his career at Racing Club, just like Mariano. Pablo also spent several seasons playing in Italy.
