Club Career
Mariano González was born in Tandil, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. He started his football journey at Racing Club de Avellaneda when he was 17 years old. He had previously played for a nearby club called Club Atlético Independiente.
He made his first professional appearance at age 21. This was under the guidance of the famous coach Osvaldo Ardiles. Mariano played in 64 top-tier matches for Racing Club. A memorable moment was when he scored the winning goal in a 4–3 game against Boca Juniors.
In 2004, Mariano moved to Italy to play for U.S. Città di Palermo in Serie A. He played regularly for two seasons there. For the 2006–07 season, he was loaned to Inter Milan. However, it was tough for him to get a spot in the starting team. Famous players like Luís Figo and Dejan Stanković were also on the team.
Inter Milan decided not to extend his loan. So, in July 2007, Palermo agreed to loan him to FC Porto in Portugal. After Ricardo Quaresma was sold to Inter, Porto decided to buy Mariano permanently for €3.25 million. He joined his former Palermo teammate, Ernesto Farías, at Porto.
Mariano started playing more often for Porto. He scored an important goal in the last minute against Manchester United. This goal helped Porto draw 2–2 in the 2008–09 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. He was also a key player when Porto won the Primeira Liga (the top Portuguese league) multiple times. He had already won it once while on loan.
After the 2010–11 season, Mariano left Porto. He then joined Estudiantes de La Plata in Argentina as a free agent.
International Career
Mariano González played for the Argentina national team. He earned his first cap (played his first game) and scored his only goal for Argentina in 2003. This was against Honduras, and the coach was Marcelo Bielsa.
The next year, he was part of the Argentina team for the 2004 Copa América. Argentina finished second in this tournament. He also played for the Olympic football team at the 2004 Summer Olympics. There, he helped his team win a gold medal!
Managerial Career
On April 1, 2022, it was announced that Mariano González would become the interim manager for Santamarina. This was the same club he was playing for at the time.
Mariano was in charge for 12 games. During this time, his team had five draws and seven losses. He was replaced as manager in June 2022. His long-time friend, Osvaldo Barsottini, was his assistant coach.
Personal Life
Mariano has a younger brother named Pablo Andrés González. Pablo is also a footballer. He plays as a striker and also started his career at Racing Club. Pablo has also spent several seasons playing in Italy.
