Her Life Story

Marie-Andrée Bertrand was born in Montreal, Canada. She started her career helping women who had been in trouble with the law. In 1963, she earned a master's degree from the Université de Montréal. She then went to the University of California, Berkeley to study more about crime and justice, where she earned her Ph.D. in 1967.

After her studies, she became a professor at the School of Criminology at the Université de Montréal. She taught and did research there for many years. She also taught a special course in Spain about how gender and race connect with legal rules. Marie-Andrée Bertrand passed away in Montreal in 2011.

What She Studied

Marie-Andrée Bertrand focused her research on three main areas:

  • How rules about certain substances affect people.
  • How the justice system treats women.
  • New ideas about how laws and society affect women.

She wrote important works comparing how women were involved in legal issues in different countries. She also looked at how women were treated in legal facilities around the world.

Her Work for Change

Beyond her teaching and research, Marie-Andrée Bertrand was also very active in making changes. Early in her career, she was one of five people on an important government committee called the Le Dain Commission.

She strongly believed in women's rights and was a tireless feminist. Even when she was older, she was quoted saying that a retired feminist doesn't easily rest and doesn't want to! She always worked to improve things for women.
