Marie-Claire Daveluy (born August 15, 1880 – died January 21, 1968) was an important Canadian librarian, historian, and writer. She is known as a pioneer in the field of library science in Canada. This means she helped create new ways to organize and manage libraries.

Who Was Marie-Claire Daveluy?

Marie-Claire Daveluy was born in Montreal, Quebec. Her parents were Georges Daveluy and Marie Lesieur Desaulniers. She went to school at the Hochelaga Convent. She loved books and learning from a young age.

Becoming a Library Expert

In 1920, Marie-Claire earned a special degree in library science from McGill University. Library science is all about how libraries are set up and how books are organized.

She worked at the Bibliothèque municipale de Montréal. From 1920 to 1943, she was an assistant librarian. She also became the head of cataloguing from 1930 to 1941. Cataloguing is the process of listing and describing books so people can find them easily.

Helping Others Learn About Libraries

Marie-Claire Daveluy didn't just work in libraries; she helped teach others. In 1937, she and Aegidius Fauteux started the École de bibliothécaires (School for Librarians) at the Université de Montréal. She was in charge of this school for many years.

She also helped create the Association canadienne des bibliothécaires de langue française in 1943. This group brought together French-speaking librarians in Canada. From 1943 to 1948, she even had a weekly radio show on Radio-Canada. On her show, she shared interesting historical stories.

Writing Exciting Stories for Young People

Marie-Claire Daveluy was also a talented writer. She wrote many novels especially for young people. Her stories often mixed Canadian history with exciting adventures and romance.

Some of her popular books include Aventures de Perrine et Charlot and Jeanne-Mance, 1606-1673. She also wrote several fairy tales. These included Le Filleul du roi Grolo, Sur les ailes de l'oiseau bleu, and Une Révolte au pays des fées. She also wrote articles for different magazines like Revue d'histoire de l'Amérique française [fr] and L'Oiseau bleu.

Awards and Recognition

Marie-Claire Daveluy was recognized for her amazing work. She was the first woman to become a member of the Montreal Historical Society. This shows how important her historical research was.

In 1924, she won the Prix David [fr] for her historical novel Aventures de Perrine et Charlot. Later, in 1934, she received another important award, the Prix de l'Académie Française. She also won a second Prix David for her book Jeanne-Mance, 1606-1673.

Marie-Claire Daveluy passed away in Montreal in 1968, at the age of 87. She was buried at the Notre Dame des Neiges Cemetery in Montreal.
