Her Animated Films

Marie-Hélène Turcotte is known for her unique animated short films. These are short movies, usually less than an hour long, that tell a story using animation.

The Formation of Clouds

In 2010, Turcotte directed a short film called The Formation of Clouds (which in French is La formation des nuages). This film was shown at many festivals, including the Montreal Animation Film Festival in 2010. It won awards, too! In 2011, it was named the best animation film at the Filmfest Dresden. It also won the "Most Innovative Short Film" award at the 2011 International Film Festival for Youth in Vancouver.

Red of the Yew Tree

Another one of her famous short films is Red of the Yew Tree (or If ou le rouge perdu in French), which came out in 2016. This film was shown at big events like the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival, Animafest Zagreb, and the GLAS Animation Film Festival in 2017.

For Red of the Yew Tree, Marie-Hélène Turcotte and her editor, Felix Dufour-Laperrière, were nominated for a Canadian Screen Award in 2017. This award was for the Best Animated Short film.

Turcotte has explained that the red berries in the film, which come from the yew tree, can represent new life or offspring. The yew tree itself was seen by ancient people like the Greeks and Romans as a symbol of both life and death.

Future Projects

After finishing Red of the Yew Tree, Marie-Hélène Turcotte began working on a new short film. This film is called MC and is about a man living in a city. Her film M. Carreaux was released in 2020.
