Marie Duflo was a smart French woman who lived from 1940 to 2019. She was a mathematician who studied how likely things are to happen. She also worked as an activist, helping people and supporting international causes. Marie Duflo wrote many books about math and about the country of Nicaragua.
Her Journey in Learning and Teaching
Marie Duflo went to a special school in France called the École normale supérieure de jeunes filles. She finished her studies there in 1959. Later, in 1969, she earned a very high degree, like a super-doctorate, from the University of Paris. Her big research project was about math topics like "Markov processes." After that, she became a professor. She taught at important universities, including Université Paris-Nord and the University of Marne-la-Vallée.
Helping Others: Marie Duflo's Activism
Marie Duflo was very active in helping people, especially in Latin America. In 1968, she went to a special meeting in Havana, Cuba, with other French mathematicians. In the 1980s, she took on a big role in the French Socialist Party. She was in charge of issues related to Central America. Later, she became the main person in charge of all Latin American affairs for the party. Even after she retired from teaching, Marie Duflo kept working as an activist. She helped people who had moved to France from other countries. A special paper written in 2020 about the rights of non-citizens was dedicated to her memory.
