Marie of Boulogne facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Marie of Boulogne was an important noblewoman who lived a long time ago, from about 1136 to 1182. She was the Countess of Boulogne from 1159 to 1170. Boulogne was a county, which is like a small region ruled by a count or countess, located in what is now France.

Early Life and Becoming a Nun

Marie was the daughter of Stephen of England, who was the King of England, and Matilda of Boulogne. When she was young, Marie was sent to live in a convent. A convent is a special place where women called nuns live and dedicate their lives to religious service. Marie was meant to become a nun herself.

Becoming Countess

Marie's life changed unexpectedly. Her brother, William of Blois, was supposed to inherit the County of Boulogne. But when he died, Marie became the next in line to rule Boulogne. This meant she had to leave the convent and her life as a nun.

To rule the county, Marie was married to a man named Matthew of Alsace. Marie and Matthew then ruled Boulogne together as countess and count.

Marriage and Later Life

Marie and Matthew's marriage was not a happy one. They decided to get a divorce in 1170.

After Marie passed away, Matthew continued to rule Boulogne until 1173. Their daughter, Ida of Boulogne, then became the Countess of Boulogne. Marie and Matthew also had another daughter, Maud of Boulogne, who later married Henry I of Brabant.
