Early Life and Education
Mariela Griffor grew up in Concepcion, Chile. She studied at the University of Santiago in Chile. She also attended the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro.
In 1985, Mariela had to leave Chile. She moved to Sweden and lived there for a while. Later, she moved to the United States. She earned a degree in Journalism from Wayne State University. She also got a master's degree in creative writing from New England College. Mariela and her husband moved back to the United States in 1998. They now live in Michigan.

Mariela Griffor is a co-founder of the Institute for Creative Writers at Wayne State University. She is also the publisher of Marick Press. Her poems have been featured in many literary magazines.
Her books of poetry include Exiliana and House. Her more recent books are The Psychiatrist (published in 2013) and Declassified (published in 2017). Mariela Griffor also serves as an honorary consul for Chile in Michigan. This means she helps people from Chile who live in Michigan.
