Early Life and Background
Mariella Ahrens was born in Leningrad, which is now called Saint Petersburg, in the Soviet Union. Her father, Reinhard Ahrens, was a German computer specialist. Her mother, Svetlana Ahrens, was a Bulgarian eye doctor.
Mariella lived in Bulgaria until she was three years old. In 1974, her family moved to Berlin-Friedrichshain, which was in East Germany at the time.

Mariella Ahrens wanted to become an actress. She first tried to get into the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts. After not being accepted there, she went on to study acting at the Fritz-Kirchhoff-Schule in Berlin. This school helped her learn the skills needed for her acting career.

On December 12, 2006, Mariella married Patrick Alexander Hubertus Graf von Faber-Castell. Their civil wedding took place in New York City. They had met in September 2005 and got engaged in September 2006. Even though she was sometimes called "Countess von Faber-Castell," she continued to use her name Ahrens professionally.
Their church wedding was held on July 7, 2007. It took place at the Martin Luther Church in Schloss Stein, near Nuremberg. Patrick Graf von Faber-Castell adopted Mariella's first daughter, Isabella. Mariella and Patrick had a daughter together, Lucia Marie Christina, who was born on March 24, 2007, in Berlin. In November 2012, Mariella and Patrick announced they were separating. They divorced in 2015.
