Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Marijedi (also called Mariyedi) are an Indigenous Australian group of people. They have lived for a very long time in the Northern Territory of Australia. They are one of the many unique First Nations peoples who have rich cultures and histories across the continent.

Where the Marijedi Lived

The Marijedi people traditionally lived in a special area of land. This land was mostly swampland, which means it had a lot of wet, marshy areas. Their territory was about 200 square miles (520 km2) in size. It stretched west from a place called Mount Greenwood and went north towards Cape Scott. This land was very important to them, providing everything they needed for life.

Their Traditional Country

The Marijedi's traditional country was a significant part of their identity. Living in swampland meant they had to understand and adapt to their environment. They knew how to find food and resources in these wet areas. Their connection to this land is a key part of their heritage and stories.

Other Names for the Marijedi

Sometimes, different groups of people have different names for the same group. The Marijedi are also known by another name: Murijadi. This name was given to them by the Murrinh-Patha people. When one group gives a name to another group, it's called an exonym. It helps us understand how different Indigenous groups interacted with each other in the past.
