Marilyn Mazur is a talented percussionist from Denmark. She was born in New York City on January 18, 1955. Since 1975, she has played drums and other percussion instruments with many different music groups. Marilyn mostly taught herself how to play. However, she also has a degree in percussion from the Royal Danish Academy of Music.

Marilyn's Musical Journey
Marilyn Mazur was born in New York City. Her parents were from Poland and Africa-America. When she was six years old, her family moved to Denmark. She first learned to play the piano. But when she was 19, she started playing the drums. She was inspired by famous drummers like Al Foster and Airto Moreira.
Starting Her Own Bands
In 1973, Marilyn started her very first band called Zirenes. Later, in 1978, she created an all-woman theater band named Primi. These early bands helped her grow as a musician.
Playing with Music Legends
Marilyn's career took off in 1985. She was asked to join a special music project. This project became the famous album Aura by Miles Davis. Soon after, she toured and performed with Miles Davis. She also played with other legendary musicians. These included Gil Evans, Wayne Shorter, and Jan Garbarek.
Shamania: Her All-Woman Band
Marilyn Mazur also leads her own band called Shamania. This band is made up of talented female musicians from Scandinavia. They play a type of music called avant-garde jazz. This means they like to experiment with new sounds and ideas.

Marilyn Mazur has received many awards for her music. The American magazine Down Beat recognized her talent several times. They called her a "percussion-talent deserving wider recognition." In 2001, she won the Jazzpar Prize. This was the biggest international jazz award in the world at that time.
