About Her Life
Marina Basmanova was born in a city called Leningrad (which is now St. Petersburg). She grew up in a family where both her parents were artists. Her father, Pavel Basmanov, and her mother, Natalia Basmanova, were both artists and illustrators for books.
Marina Basmanova is also known for her connection with Joseph Brodsky. He was a very famous Russian-American poet. They were together from 1962 to 1972. They had a son named Andrei, who was born in 1967. Joseph Brodsky wrote many beautiful poems about her.
Her Artistic Work
In the late 1950s, Marina Basmanova became the first student of a Russian painter named Vladimir Sterligov. He was a student of another famous artist, Kazimir Malevich.
Her first art show happened in 1959. It was held in the apartment of artists Vladimir Sterligov and Tatiana Glebova. In the 1960s, Marina Basmanova started working as an illustrator for children's books. She even illustrated some books together with her mother. In 1963, she created a series of portrait sketches of Anna Akhmatova, who was a well-known Russian poet.
