The Marine Way Bridge is a special type of bridge in Southport, England. It's called a cable-stayed bridge, which means it uses strong cables to hold up the main part of the bridge. This bridge helps people travel along Marine Parade.
About the Marine Way Bridge
The Marine Way Bridge is a modern cable-stayed bridge. This design uses tall towers and many strong cables. These cables connect from the towers to the bridge deck. They help to support the weight of the bridge and anything crossing it. The bridge is an important link in Southport.
Building the Bridge
The Marine Way Bridge was designed by a company called Babtie, along with architects from Nicol Russell Studios. It was built by a construction company named Balfour Beatty. This new bridge was needed to replace an older cast iron bridge. The old bridge had to close in 1990 because it was no longer safe.
The main part of the new bridge stretches 80 metres (about 262 feet). The total length of the bridge is 150 metres (about 492 feet). It was a big project to build this important crossing. The bridge officially opened for cars and other traffic on May 17, 2004.
Official Opening Ceremony
A few months after it opened to traffic, the Marine Way Bridge had a special official opening. Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and Sophie, Countess of Wessex visited Southport. They officially opened the bridge on July 19, 2004. This was a big event for the town.
