Mario Thomas Barrios (born May 18, 1995) is an American professional boxer. He is known for his powerful punches. Since June 2024, he has been the World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion. Before that, he held the World Boxing Association (WBA) super lightweight title from 2019 to 2021.

Mario Barrios started his professional boxing career in 2013. He quickly became known for his exciting fights.
Winning the WBA Super Lightweight Title
On May 11, 2019, Barrios fought Juan Jose Velasco. Barrios won by knockout in the second round. It was a powerful body shot that ended the fight.
Barrios vs. Akhmedov
On September 28, 2019, Mario Barrios faced Batyr Akhmedov. Akhmedov had not lost any fights before this. Barrios won by a decision from the judges. The scores were 114–112, 115–111, and 116–111. This win earned him the vacant WBA (Regular) super lightweight title. During the fight, Barrios knocked Akhmedov down twice. This happened in the fourth and twelfth rounds.
Barrios vs. Karl
On October 31, 2020, Barrios defended his WBA title. He fought Ryan Karl in his hometown of San Antonio, Texas. The fight was part of a big boxing event. Barrios won by technical knockout (TKO) in the sixth round. A TKO happens when the referee stops the fight. This can be because a boxer is hurt or cannot continue safely. In this fight, Karl got a cut above his eye. After the doctor checked it, Barrios landed strong punches. He knocked Karl down, and the referee stopped the fight.
Barrios vs. Davis
On June 26, 2021, Barrios fought Gervonta Davis. Davis was also undefeated at the time. This was a big fight shown on TV. Davis knocked Barrios down twice in the eighth round. He knocked him down again in the eleventh round. The referee then stopped the fight, giving Davis a technical knockout win. This was Mario Barrios's first professional loss.
Moving to Welterweight
After his loss to Davis, Barrios decided to move to a higher weight class. This new class is called welterweight.
Barrios vs. Thurman
On February 5, 2022, Barrios challenged Keith Thurman. Thurman was a former champion. The fight was in Las Vegas. It was a chance for Barrios to get closer to a world title. After 12 rounds, Barrios lost the fight by a unanimous decision. This means all the judges thought Thurman won. The scores were 117–111, 118–110, and 118–110.
WBC Continental Americas Welterweight Title
Barrios vs. Santiago
A year after his second loss, Barrios fought Jovanie Santiago. This fight was on February 11, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas. The fight was for the vacant WBC Continental Americas welterweight title.
The fight was tough for seven rounds. In the eighth round, Barrios landed a powerful left hook to Santiago's body. Santiago fell but bravely got back up. Barrios then kept attacking. Santiago's team threw in the towel, which means they stopped the fight. Barrios won by technical knockout. He became the new WBC Continental Americas welterweight champion.
WBC Interim Welterweight Champion
Barrios vs. Ugás
On September 30, 2023, Barrios fought Yordenis Ugás. Ugás was a former champion. This fight was for the vacant Interim WBC welterweight title. Many people thought Barrios would lose this fight. They saw Ugás as a more experienced welterweight.
But Barrios surprised everyone. He fought very well. He knocked Ugás down twice. This happened in the second and twelfth rounds. Barrios won the fight by a unanimous decision. The judges' scores were 118-107, 118-107, and 117-108. In the last round, Ugás even had a point taken away. This was because he spit out his mouthguard on purpose to get a break. With this big win, Barrios became the WBC Interim Champion.
Barrios vs. Maidana
On May 4, 2024, Barrios defended his WBC (Interim) Welterweight Title. He fought Fabián Maidana from Argentina. The fight was a co-main event on a big pay-per-view show. Barrios knocked Maidana down in the third round. He also had to fight with a swollen eye. Barrios won the fight by a unanimous decision. All three judges scored it 116-111 for Barrios.
Becoming the WBC Champion
On May 27, 2024, the World Boxing Council made a big announcement. They changed Terence "Bud" Crawford from their welterweight champion to "champion in recess." This means Crawford might not fight in the welterweight division again soon.
Because of this, on June 18, 2024, the WBC voted to make Mario Barrios the full champion. So, Barrios is now officially the WBC Champion of the Welterweight Division.
Barrios vs. Ramos
Barrios made his first defense of the WBC welterweight title on November 15, 2024. He fought Abel Ramos in Texas. In the second round, Barrios knocked Ramos down. Barrios used his longer reach to control the fight. However, in the sixth round, Ramos knocked Barrios down. Barrios managed to recover and finish the round.
The fight was very close and exciting. After 12 rounds, the judges' scores were different. One judge scored it for Ramos (114-112). Another scored it for Barrios (116-110). The third judge scored it a tie (113-113). This meant the fight was a split draw. Because it was a draw, Barrios kept his championship belt.
