Mario Pirani Coen (born August 3, 1925 – died April 18, 2015) was an important Italian journalist, writer, and expert on economics. He was known for his clear thinking and his role in starting one of Italy's biggest newspapers.
Life and Career
Mario Pirani Coen was born in Rome, Italy. He became a professional journalist in January 1958. Early in his career, he was close to the Italian Communist Party. However, he decided to leave the party in 1956 after the Soviet Union invaded Hungary. This event made him rethink his political views.
Later, he worked as an officer for Eni, which is a large Italian company that deals with oil and gas. This showed his interest in economics and business.
Pirani Coen worked for several newspapers and magazines, including Patrol, Il Giorno, and Il Globo. A major part of his career was helping to create la Repubblica. He started this newspaper with Eugenio Scalfari. La Repubblica quickly became one of the most important newspapers in Italy. Mario Pirani Coen served as its Deputy Director, working alongside Gianni Rocca and Giampaolo Pansa.
From 1979 to 1980, he was also the editor of another well-known magazine called L'Europeo. In 1995, Mario Pirani Coen received the Premiolino award. This is a very respected prize for journalists in Italy.
Mario Pirani Coen passed away in Rome on April 18, 2015, at the age of 89.
