Marion Holland (born July 17, 1908 – died April 6, 1989) was an American writer and artist. She wrote and illustrated many popular children's books. Marion Holland was from Washington, D.C..
Some of her most famous books include A Big Ball of String, No Children, No Pets, Billy Had a System, and The Secret Horse. Her book A Big Ball of String (published in 1958) was very successful. It sold over a million copies! This book was one of the first six Beginner Books ever published by Random House. Another famous book in that first group was The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss.

Marion Holland was born on July 17, 1908, in Washington, D.C.. She went to Central High School. Later, she studied at Swarthmore College.
Marion Holland had five children. Her daughter, Barbara Holland, also grew up to become a writer. Marion Holland had four more children with her second husband, Thomas W. Holland. Their names were Nicholas, Judith, Rebecca, and Andrew.
Her Writing Career
Marion Holland often drew the pictures for her own books. She even used her own children as models for the characters!
She also wrote stories about growing up in the Washington area. These stories appeared in newspapers like The Washington Post and The Washington Star. She often wrote letters to William Raspberry, a columnist for The Washington Post. He once said that Marion Holland's letters often arrived just when he needed an idea for his column. He noted that her letters showed her sharp wit and clever wisdom.
Marion Holland passed away from cancer on April 6, 1989. She died in Washington, D.C.
