Marion Jones Farquhar (born November 2, 1879 – died March 14, 1965) was an American tennis player. She was a very successful athlete in her time. She won the women's singles titles at the 1899 and 1902 U.S. Championships. She was also honored by being added to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2006.

Early Life and Tennis Career

Marion Jones was the daughter of John Percival Jones, a senator from Nevada. Her father also helped start the town of Santa Monica, California.

Marion Jones made history as the first tennis player from California to reach the finals of the U.S. Tennis Championships. This happened in 1898. She almost won the championship against Juliette Atkinson but lost in a very close match.

She became a U.S. women's tennis champion in 1899 and again in 1902. She also won the U.S. mixed doubles title in 1901. At the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, she was the first American woman to win an Olympic medal in tennis. Her sister, Georgina, also played tennis at those same Olympics. In 1900, Marion Jones was the first woman from outside of Britain to play at the famous Wimbledon tournament. She reached the quarterfinals there.

Marion was known for her playing style. She was mainly a "baseline player," which means she liked to hit the ball from the back of the court. She had strong "backhand" and "forehand" shots, which are different ways of hitting the ball. Her shots were also very accurate.

Life After Tennis

In 1903, Marion Jones married Robert D. Farquhar, who was an architect. They had three children together. From 1920 to 1961, Marion Jones Farquhar lived in Greenwich Village, New York City. She was well-known for her musical talents. She was a violinist and taught people how to sing. She also translated opera stories into English. For a short time, she was even in charge of the New York Chamber Opera. In 1961, she moved back to Los Angeles, California, where she lived until she passed away.
