It was part of the University of Aberdeen and located inside Marischal College. This college is a huge, beautiful building made of granite. The museum used to show off many collections owned by the university. While it is no longer open to the public, it now works as a special center for the university's museum collections.

Exploring the Museum's Collections
The Marischal Museum was famous for its incredible collections. These included ancient items from Ancient Egypt and ancient Greece and Rome. It also had many objects from different cultures around the world.
You could also find items about Scotland's early history and old coins. These collections are very important. The Scottish Government has even said they are of national importance.
A Look at the Museum's History
The idea for the Marischal Museum first came up in 1899. It officially opened its doors in 1907. Professor Robert William Reid helped create and manage the museum. He was also a professor of anatomy at the university. He led the museum until he retired in 1938.
Why the Museum Closed
The Marischal Museum closed in July 2008. This happened because Marischal College needed a lot of renovation work. Even though parts of the college reopened in 2011, the museum stayed closed to visitors.
Today, the museum building is a center for the university's collections. It has labs for keeping old items safe and storage rooms for research. This center helps other museums at the University of Aberdeen.
To make sure people could still see some of its treasures, the University of Aberdeen opened King's Museum in April 2011. This smaller museum is in Old Aberdeen. King's Museum often changes its displays, showing items that used to be in the Marischal Museum.
