Marissa grew up in Alice Springs, a town in Australia. She lived there with her uncle, aunt, and grandmother. Her grandmother, Mitjili Napanangka Gibson, even played her grandmother in the movie! Marissa went to high school in Alice Springs but left when she was in Year 11.
She is very good with languages. Marissa can speak three languages: Warlpiri, Luritja, and English. She also learned some Japanese.
Before living in Alice Springs, Marissa lived in Kintore. There, she saw what life was like in very remote communities. This experience helped her understand the story told in the film Samson and Delilah.
