Marjorie Pigott RCA was a talented Japanese Canadian artist. She was born in Yokohama, Japan, on January 6, 1904. Later in life, she moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where she passed away on January 12, 1990. Marjorie Pigott was known for her unique way of painting. She combined traditional Japanese watercolour techniques with Canadian landscapes.

Marjorie's father was English, and her mother was Japanese. Her mother noticed Marjorie's artistic talent early on. So, she sent Marjorie to study at the Nanga School. This school was founded way back in the 15th century. Marjorie's mother came from a noble family. Their home was full of beautiful old Japanese treasures. Sadly, most of these treasures were lost during the big 1923 Great Kantō earthquake.

After studying for 12 years, Marjorie Pigott became a Nanga master herself. As World War II was about to begin, Marjorie and her sister Edith left Japan. They arrived in Vancouver in 1940 and then settled in Toronto. From 1955 to 1965, Marjorie taught the Nanga painting technique. She taught it to Japanese people living in Canada.

Painting Canadian Scenes

Marjorie started painting Canadian scenes. She painted beautiful places like the landscapes around Muskoka. She used the Nanga technique for these paintings. Over time, she developed her own special style. This style was a mix of semi-abstract and "wet-into-wet" watercolour painting. "Wet-into-wet" means applying paint to paper that is already wet. This creates soft, blended colours.

Artistic Achievements

Marjorie Pigott's artwork was shown in many exhibitions. She had her own solo shows and also participated in group shows across Canada. Her paintings are now part of important art collections. One of these is the National Gallery of Canada.

She was also a member of several art groups. These included the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour. She was also part of the Ontario Society of Artists. In 1973, she was chosen to be a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. This is a great honour for Canadian artists.
