Mark Gwyn (born 1963, died August 2024) was an important American police leader. He was the director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI). He was the eighth person to lead the TBI. He was also the first African American to hold this important job.

Mark Gwyn's Early Life and Education
Mark Gwyn was born in McMinnville, Tennessee. He went to college and earned two degrees. He got his first degree from Middle Tennessee State University. Later, he earned a master's degree from Tennessee State University.
A Career in Law Enforcement
Mark Gwyn started his police career in 1985. He worked as a patrol officer in McMinnville, Tennessee. Three years later, he joined the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI). At the TBI, he became a Special Agent.
As a Special Agent, Gwyn spent eight years investigating serious crimes. In 1996, he was promoted to Executive Officer. By 2001, Gwyn became the assistant director of the TBI. He was in charge of the Forensic Services Division. This meant he supervised the state's three crime labs.
Becoming TBI Director
In 2004, Mark Gwyn became the director of the TBI. This was a very important leadership role. He was the eighth director in the agency's history. He was also the first African American to lead the TBI.
Advanced Training and Service
Gwyn continued his education throughout his career. He attended special training programs. These included the FBI's National Executive Institute. He also studied at Harvard University. He even received terrorism training in Israel.
Mark Gwyn also served on several boards. He was on the board for the University of Tennessee National Forensic Academy. He also helped local groups like the Salvation Army. He supported the Second Harvest Food Bank.
Awards and Retirement
In 2006, Middle Tennessee State University honored Gwyn. They recognized him as a Distinguished African-American Alumni. In 2010, he received another award for his professional achievements. Mark Gwyn retired from the TBI in 2018.

Mark Gwyn passed away in August 2024. He was 61 years old. He died at his home near Nashville, Tennessee.
