Mark Anatolyevich Zakharov (Russian: Марк Анатольевич Захаров; 13 October 1933 – 28 September 2019) was a famous Soviet and Russian director. He directed plays for the stage and movies. He also wrote screenplays and was a teacher. He was best known for his imaginative films that often had a deeper meaning, like fables. In 1991, he was given the title of People's Artist of the USSR.
Zakharov was the main director at the Lenkom Theatre from 1973 until he passed away. He brought together a fantastic group of actors. Because of him, Lenkom became one of the top theatres in the Soviet Union.

Mark Zakharov's Early Life and Career
Mark Zakharov was born in Moscow, Russia. His parents were both teachers. His grandfather, Boris Shirinkin, was from a noble family and died in World War I. His grandmother was from the Crimean Karaites group. Mark's father, Anatoly Shirinkin, was a soldier and later a physical education teacher.
Mark's mother, Galina Zakharova, was an actress. She taught acting classes to children. His maternal grandfather was a military officer. His maternal grandmother ran an orphanage. Mark always felt he was Russian. He also knew his family had some Tatar heritage.
Mark grew up in Moscow. His mother encouraged him to become an actor. After trying several times, he was accepted into acting school. He graduated from the State Theatre Institute in 1955.
Leading the Lenkom Theatre
Zakharov became the Artistic Director of Moscow's Lenkom Theatre in 1973. He greatly influenced Moscow's theatre scene. He helped create a special group of actors who worked with him at Lenkom. This group included famous names like Yevgeny Leonov, Inna Churikova, Oleg Yankovsky, and Aleksandr Abdulov. His daughter, Aleksandra Zakharova, also became a well-known actress in his theatre.
Mark Zakharov passed away in Moscow on 28 September 2019. He was buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery.

- Order of Merit for the Fatherland: He received this high honor four times, including the 1st class (the highest) in 2008. This was for his amazing work in theatre.
