Holy Trinity Church on the corner of Market Street and Sidney Street

Market Street is a busy shopping street in the heart of Cambridge, England. It connects two important areas: Market Hill (where the main Market Square is) to the west, and Sidney Street to the east.

If you keep going west past the Market Square, Market Street changes its name to St Mary's Street. This street is just north of Great St Mary's, which is the main church for the University. East of Sidney Street, you'll find Hobson's Passage, which leads to Hobson Street. There are also smaller passages nearby: Market Passage to the north and Petty Cury, a street just for walkers, to the south.

Famous Buildings

Market Street is home to some interesting buildings, each with its own story.

Holy Trinity Church

At the eastern end of Market Street, right on the corner with Sidney Street, stands Holy Trinity Church. This historic church was built around the year 1400. It was constructed in a style called the Perpendicular style, which is a type of Gothic architecture known for its tall, straight lines and large windows.

Henry Martyn Hall

You'll also find Henry Martyn Hall on Market Street. This building is named after Henry Martyn, who was a priest and missionary. A famous architect named Edward Schroeder Prior designed it. He was part of the Arts and Crafts movement, a style that focused on traditional craftsmanship. The building was finished between 1885 and 1887. Today, the ground floor of Henry Martyn Hall is used for shops.

Radcliffe Court

Radcliffe Court is a modern building that was completed in 1964. It has shops on the ground floor and apartments above them. These apartments look out over the lively Market Square. The building was designed by the architectural firm Stanley R. Nevell & Partners.
