Markingknife
A marking knife, a helpful tool for woodworkers.

A marking knife is a special tool used in woodworking. It helps woodworkers draw very accurate lines on wood. These lines act like guides for tools such as a hand saw or a chisel, making sure cuts are super precise, especially when creating woodworking joints.

What is a Marking Knife?

A marking knife is a type of measuring tool that helps woodworkers prepare their projects. It's designed to "scribe" or scratch a clear, fine line onto the wood surface. This line is much more accurate than a pencil line because it actually cuts the wood fibers.

How Does a Marking Knife Work?

The blade of a marking knife is made from strong tool steel. What makes it special is that it's sharpened on only one side. The other side of the blade is flat. This flat side is designed to slide perfectly along a ruler or a straight edge.

When you pull the knife across the wood, the sharp edge cuts the tiny fibers of the wood. This creates a very clean and exact line. This precise line helps a woodworker guide their saw or chisel to make very accurate cuts. The handle of the knife is usually made from wood or plastic, making it comfortable to hold.

When Do Woodworkers Use It?

Marking knives are best used when you need to draw lines across the grain of the wood. Imagine the wood grain as tiny straws running in one direction. When you cut across them, the knife works perfectly.

However, woodworkers usually avoid using a marking knife to draw lines with the grain. This is because the blade might follow the natural direction of the wood fibers, which can make the line wavy or inaccurate. For long lines that go with the grain, a different tool called a scratch awl is often preferred because it's better suited for that task.
