Marlon Starling (born August 29, 1959) is an American former professional boxer. He was known as the "Magic Man" during his career. He competed in boxing from 1979 to 1990. Marlon Starling held important boxing titles, including the WBA welterweight title and the WBC welterweight title.

Marlon Starling's Boxing Journey

Marlon Starling was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1959. He started his boxing training with the help of coach Johnny Duke. Johnny Duke helped him prepare for the national Junior Olympics championship.

Marlon became a professional boxer in 1979. He had an amazing start, winning 25 fights in a row! His first loss came in 1982 to Donald Curry. It was a very close fight that lasted 12 rounds. Starling fought Curry again in 1984 for the WBA and IBF welterweight titles. He lost that fight too, after 15 rounds. Marlon Starling was known for his "high guard" fighting style. This means he kept his hands up high to protect his face.

Winning World Titles

Marlon Starling got his second chance at a world title in 1987. He fought Mark Breland for the WBA welterweight title. Starling won the fight by knocking out Breland in the 11th round. This was a big win for him!

In his third time defending the title, Starling faced Tomas Molinares. The fight ended in a confusing way. Molinares hit Starling with a punch right as the bell rang to end the sixth round. Starling fell, and the referee counted him out. Molinares was first named the new champion. However, the boxing officials later changed the result of the fight to a "no contest." This means it was as if the fight never happened, but Molinares still kept the title.

In 1989, Marlon Starling won another major title. He knocked out Lloyd Honeyghan to become the WBC welterweight champion.

Later Fights and Retirement

The next year, in 1990, Starling moved up a weight class to challenge Michael Nunn for the IBF middleweight title. He lost that fight by decision. In his very next fight, Starling lost his WBC welterweight title to Maurice Blocker in a close decision. This was Marlon Starling's last professional fight. He retired from boxing with a great record of 45 wins, 6 losses, and 1 draw, with 27 wins coming by knockout.
