Marly Sarney held important roles during her husband's political career. She was the First Lady of Maranhão from 1966 to 1970. This was when José Sarney was the governor of that state.
Later, she became the Second Lady of Brazil for a short time in 1985. This happened when her husband was the Vice President. Soon after, when he became president, she took on the role of First Lady of Brazil. She served in this position for five years, from 1985 to 1990.
