Marmon Group is a big American company based in Chicago, Illinois. It's a "holding company," which means it owns many different businesses. These businesses make things like transportation equipment and electrical parts. They also offer services for construction and retail stores.

Marmon Group was started in 1953 by two brothers, Jay Pritzker and Robert Pritzker. At first, it was called Colson Corporation. Since 2013, a very large company called Berkshire Hathaway has owned Marmon Group. One important part of Marmon's business is making tank cars. These are special train cars used to carry liquids or gases. They sell these through companies like Union Tank Car Company in the U.S. and Procor in Canada.

How Marmon Group Started and Grew

In 1953, the Pritzker brothers bought a company called Colson Corporation. This company was having a tough time. It made things like wheels for carts (casters), bicycles, and wheelchairs. Its sales were only about $3 million.

In 1964, after buying another company called Marmon-Herrington, the name was changed to Marmon Group. Over the years, Marmon Group grew by buying other companies. For example, they bought Cerro Corporation in 1976 and TransUnion in 1981.

Later, in 2008, the Pritzker family sold a big part of Marmon Group to Berkshire Hathaway. Berkshire Hathaway is owned by famous investor Warren Buffett. They paid $4.8 billion for 63.6% of the company. Berkshire Hathaway planned to buy the rest of Marmon Group over the next few years. By 2013, Berkshire Hathaway owned 100% of Marmon Group.
