Marquard Gude (born February 1, 1635 – died November 26, 1689) was a German archaeologist and classical scholar. He is best known for collecting ancient Greek and Latin writings.
Early Life and Studies
Marquard Gude was born in Rendsburg, Holstein, Germany. His family wanted him to study law. However, Marquard was much more interested in classical studies. This meant he loved learning about ancient Greece and Rome.
In 1658, he traveled to the Netherlands. He hoped to find a job teaching classic subjects there. The next year, he became a tutor for a rich young man named Samuel Schars. He also traveled with Schars.
Travels and Discoveries
During his travels, Gude found many old writings. He carefully copied down Greek and Latin inscriptions. These were like ancient messages carved into stone. He also copied old manuscripts, which are handwritten books.
Samuel Schars liked Gude very much. Because of this, Gude turned down other job offers. He stayed with Schars for many years. In 1671, Gude finally took a new job. He became the librarian for Duke Christian Albert. This duke ruled Holstein-Gottorp.
Later Life and Legacy
Samuel Schars passed away in 1675. He left most of his money to Marquard Gude. In 1678, Gude left the duke's service. He decided to live a private life for a while.
But in 1682, he started working for Christian V of Denmark. He became a special advisor. Gude worked for the king almost until he died.
Marquard Gude's biggest work was his collection of Greek and Latin inscriptions. This huge collection was not published until 1731. That was many years after he died. He also published the very first edition of a book by Hippolytus the Martyr. This book was about the Antichrist. Gude also wrote notes on the fables of Phaedrus. He even found four new fables by Phaedrus!
We know a lot about Gude's life from his letters. These letters were published in 1697. They also tell us about what people were learning back then.
