A marriage proposal is when one person in a relationship asks the other person to marry them. If the other person says yes, this is the start of their engagement. An engaged couple is planning to get married. The man is called a "fiance" and the woman is called a "fiancee."

What is a Marriage Proposal?

A marriage proposal is a special moment. It is when someone asks their partner to spend their lives together as a married couple. This usually happens after a couple has been together for some time. It shows a deep commitment and a wish to build a future together.

Traditional Ways to Propose

In many Western cultures, there are common traditions for proposals. Often, the person proposing will get down on one bent knee. They might hold a ring, often an engagement ring, as they ask. This means they want their parents to be happy about their decision.

Modern Proposals

Today, proposals can be very personal and unique. While some people still follow old traditions, others create new ones. For example, in the United States, about 5% of proposals are done by women. This shows that anyone can propose, no matter their gender. Proposals can happen in many different places and ways. The most important part is the loving commitment between the two people.
