Marsha Chantal de Cordova was born on 23 January 1976. She is a British politician who has been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Battersea since 2017. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the UK Parliament.
Marsha de Cordova is a member of the Labour Party. Before becoming an MP, she was a member of Lambeth London Borough Council from 2014 to 2018. Since 2024, she has also served as the Second Church Estates Commissioner. From 2020 to 2021, she was a Shadow Secretary of State for Women and Equalities. This means she was the main spokesperson for her party on these topics.

About Marsha de Cordova
Early Life and School
Marsha Chantal de Cordova was born in Bristol, England, on 23 January 1976. She has five brothers and sisters. One of her brothers is the professional footballer Bobby Decordova-Reid.
Marsha was born with a condition called nystagmus. This means her eyes make small, quick movements, which affects her vision. She is registered as blind. She went to Hanham High School when she was younger.
Education and Early Career
After school, Marsha de Cordova studied Law and European Policy Studies at London South Bank University. She then worked for several charities. These included Action for Blind People.
In 2014, she started her own charity called South East London Vision. Before becoming an MP, she worked as a director at the Thomas Pocklington Trust. This charity helps people with sight loss.
Political Journey
Becoming a Councillor
Marsha de Cordova started her political career in 2014. She was elected as a Labour Party councillor. She represented the Larkhall area on Lambeth Council. Councillors help make decisions for their local community.
Becoming an MP for Battersea
In 2017, Marsha de Cordova was elected as the MP for Battersea. She won this seat in the 2017 general election. Before her, the area was represented by Conservative politician Jane Ellison.
Roles in Parliament
On 9 October 2017, Marsha de Cordova became the Shadow Minister for Disabled People. This role meant she spoke for the Labour Party on issues affecting disabled people. She took over from Marie Rimmer.
Later, in 2020, the new Labour leader, Keir Starmer, gave her a bigger role. She became the Shadow Secretary of State for Women and Equalities. She replaced Dawn Butler in this position.
As an MP, Marsha de Cordova has worked to make the Parliamentary Estate more accessible. This means making sure buildings where politicians work are easy for disabled people to use.
In May 2021, she joined other public figures in signing an open letter. The letter asked the government to do more to stop violence against women and girls.
In September 2021, Marsha de Cordova decided to leave her role as shadow equalities secretary. She wanted to spend more time focusing on her local area, Battersea.
On 7 October 2024, she was appointed as the Second Church Estates Commissioner. In this role, she represents the Church Commissioners in Parliament. She also works with the General Synod of the Church of England.
