Martel Schwichtenberg was born on June 5, 1896, in Hanover, Germany. She loved art from a young age. To follow her passion, she studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. This was a famous art academy in Düsseldorf.
Early Career and Design Work
Martel began her art career in Hanover. She worked as an interior designer. This means she helped decorate and arrange the inside of buildings. She also designed packaging for products. Her designs were creative and unique.
Around 1920, Martel moved to Berlin. Berlin was a lively city for artists. She opened her own art studio there. She continued her work as a designer.
Artistic Groups and Portraits
Martel was part of important art groups. She joined the Werkbund and the Novembergruppe. These groups were made up of artists who wanted to try new things. They explored modern art styles.
Martel also painted many portraits. She captured the faces of German artists. These artists were part of the "avant-garde." This term means they were creating new and experimental art.
Moving to South Africa and Return
In the mid-1930s, Martel moved to South Africa. There, she started a ceramics workshop. Ceramics is the art of making things from clay. Sadly, her workshop was destroyed by a fire. After this, Martel returned to Germany in 1939.
Martel Schwichtenberg passed away on July 31, 1945. She died in Sulzburg, Germany.
