Early Life
Martha Johnson was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She was born on December 18, 1950.
Music Career
Before becoming a famous musician, Martha worked as a medical receptionist in Toronto. She started her music journey playing the organ in a cover band called "Oh Those Pants." Later, in the early 1970s, she was part of another Toronto band called the Doncasters.
Forming Martha and the Muffins
In 1977, Martha joined David Millar, Mark and Tim Gane, and Carl Finkle. Together, they formed the band Martha and the Muffins. The band later changed its name to M + M.
"Echo Beach" and Awards
As the lead singer, Martha helped the band create an international hit song called "Echo Beach." This song became very popular around the world. In 1985, Martha and her husband, Mark Gane, won a CASBY award. They received this award for their great work producing music for the band.
Solo Music for Kids
In 1997, Martha released a solo album just for children. It was called Songs from the Treehouse. This album was a big success. She won a Juno Award for Best Children's Album at the Juno Awards of 1997. The Juno Awards are like the Grammy Awards for Canadian music.
