Martha Magee (born around 1755, died 1846) was a very kind and generous person from Northern Ireland. She is famous for helping to start Magee College, which was named after her. She gave a lot of money to help young people get an education.

Who Was Martha Magee?

Her Early Life and Family

Martha Maria Magee was born in a town called Lurgan, probably around the year 1755. Her father's name was Robert Stewart. She married a Presbyterian minister named William Magee. A minister is a leader in a Christian church. Sadly, William died in 1800. After her husband passed away, Martha raised their two sons. Both of her sons joined the military, but they also died when they were young men.

A Generous Gift for Education

Martha Magee later inherited a lot of money. This money came from her two brothers who had been in the military in India. After receiving this fortune, Martha became a philanthropist. This means she spent her life giving money and help to many good causes. In 1845, just one year before she died, Martha made a very important decision. She left £20,000 in her will to the Presbyterian Church of Ireland. This large sum of money was meant to start a new college. The college would teach subjects like theology (the study of religion) and the arts (like history and literature).

Magee College Opens

Martha Magee passed away in Dublin on June 22, 1846. Her dream of a new college came true. Magee College officially opened its doors in 1865. At first, it was mainly a college for studying religion. However, it welcomed students from all different churches and backgrounds. They could study many different subjects there. Thanks to Martha Magee's kindness, many young people have been able to get an education at the college named after her.
