Her Early Life and Education
Martha Southgate was born in Cleveland, Ohio. She went to Smith College for her first degree. Later, she earned a special degree in creative writing. This was from Goddard College, where she learned how to write stories and books.
Her Writing Journey
Martha Southgate has written several books for readers. Her first novel, Another Way to Dance, was published in 1996. This book tells the story of a 14-year-old Black girl who dreams of becoming a ballerina. In 1997, this novel won the Coretta Scott King John Steptoe Award for New Talent. This award is given to new writers for their excellent work.
In 2002, she released her second novel, The Fall of Rome: A Novel. This story takes place at a private boys boarding school in New England.
Her third novel, Third Girl from the Left, was published in 2005. This book became one of her most recognized works.
