A Trailblazing Career in Architecture

Martha Stewart Leitch was often called "Marty" by her friends and colleagues. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Architecture from the University of Toronto. After that, she was chosen as a Commonwealth Scholar. This special award allowed her to study even more at the famous University of Cambridge in England.

Becoming a Professional Engineer

While teaching at the University of Toronto, Marty became a Professional Engineer. This means she had the official skills and knowledge to design and build things. She eventually became the Dean of Engineering at the university. As Dean, she was a mentor to hundreds of students. She helped guide them throughout her long career.

Breaking Barriers in Building Design

Marty Leitch entered a world of architecture and construction that was mostly for men. It was often tough for women to succeed in these jobs. But she was very determined to stay in these professions. She once said she would stay "come hell or high water," meaning she would stick with it no matter what.

During her amazing career, she did many important things:

  • She started a civil engineering company with her husband.
  • She taught many classes as a lecturer and assistant professor at the University of Toronto.
  • She became the Dean of Engineering at the university.
  • She was made a fellow at the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. This is a high honor for architects in Canada.
  • She was also a member of the Ontario Association of Architects. This group helps make sure architects are good at their jobs.

Marty Leitch showed that women could be leaders and experts in fields like architecture and engineering. She inspired many students and professionals during her lifetime.
