Martin G. "Marty" Barnes (March 15, 1948 – December 28, 2012) was an American politician from Paterson, New Jersey. He was a member of the Republican Party. He served as Mayor of Paterson, New Jersey for five years. He was the first African-American mayor in Paterson's history.

Early Life and Education

Marty Barnes grew up in Paterson, New Jersey. He went to Eastside High School. After high school, he studied at Seton Hall University.

Political Career

Before becoming mayor, Barnes was a City Councilman for Paterson's 3rd Ward. He was first elected to the City Council in 1974. He was re-elected five times by the people in his ward.

While serving as a councilman, Barnes also ran for the New Jersey state legislature three times. He tried to become a member of the General Assembly in 1983, 1987, and 1991.

In 1997, Barnes became the Mayor of Paterson. The previous mayor, Bill Pascrell, had won a seat in Congress. So, the city council voted to appoint Barnes to fill the mayor's office.

Later in 1997, Barnes ran in a special election to finish the rest of Pascrell's term. He won this election easily. Then, in May 1998, he ran for a full term as mayor and won again. He was the first Republican to be elected mayor by Paterson voters since 1978.

In 2002, Barnes ran for a second full term as mayor. He faced several other candidates, including Joey Torres. Barnes finished second in the election, and Joey Torres became the new mayor. After this, Barnes did not run for public office again.

Death

Marty Barnes passed away on December 28, 2012. He was 64 years old. He died at his home in Pennsylvania, where he lived with his wife and children, Gregory and Antoinette.

His funeral was held at St. Therese's Church. Many family members, friends, and supporters attended to honor his life. A non-profit group called "Friends of Marty Barnes" was created in his honor. This group raises money for good causes.
