The Martin Luther King Sr. Community Resources Collaborative building

The Martin Luther King Sr. Community Resources Collaborative is a special building in Atlanta, Georgia. It is named after Martin Luther King Sr., who was a respected minister and community leader. This large brick building officially opened on November 4, 2012. It is located in a historic area of Atlanta known as the "National Historic King District," which also includes the Sweet Auburn and Old Fourth Ward neighborhoods.

About the MLK Sr. Collaborative

The Martin Luther King Sr. Community Resources Collaborative, often called the MLK Sr. CRC, is three stories tall. It serves many purposes. Part of the building is a fellowship hall for the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church. Reverend King Sr. used to lead this church, and later he co-led it with his son, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr..

A Place for History

The Collaborative also works as a small museum. It displays important items that belonged to Reverend King Sr. These include his notes for sermons, other documents, clothing, and pictures. You can also see the original church organ that his wife, Alberta Christine Williams King, played during church services at Ebenezer.

Spaces for Community Events

The Collaborative has a large kitchen and a hall for meetings and exhibits. People often rent these spaces for private events, business meetings, and government functions.

Helping the Community

One of the main reasons the Collaborative was built was to create a strong partnership. This partnership brings together local and national non-profit groups. Their goal is to improve the lives of kids and families who need extra help in the Sweet Auburn and Old Fourth Ward areas, as well as nearby parts of Atlanta.

Programs for Families

The Collaborative offers many helpful programs. These programs focus on:

  • Reading and education
  • Learning about money
  • Finding housing
  • Getting help with jobs
  • Overall family support

These services are provided by partner organizations that have offices inside the Collaborative. These partners include Ebenezer Baptist Church, Casey Family Programs, Operation Hope, and Enroll America. Other community groups also refer people to services.

Community Resources Inside

You can find a community Cyber Cafe, run by Operation Hope, within the building. This cafe offers computers for public use. The Collaborative also has offices for its partner organizations and for its Executive Director, Detria Russell. These offices are spread across the three floors of the building.

Historic Surroundings

Because the Collaborative is in the "National Historic King District," the National Park Service manages the parking lot and the land around the building. This area includes the old Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church building, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birth home, and his gravesite. There is also a community playground nearby.
