Martin Tupper (physician) facts for kids
Martin Tupper (born April 17, 1780 – died December 8, 1844) was a respected doctor from Guernsey, an island near France. He lived in London and was known for his medical skills. One of his famous patients was the Duke of Wellington, a very important military leader.
Education and Career
Martin Tupper studied at Exeter College, Oxford, starting in 1802. He left after two years, though, without finishing his degree. Even so, he became a well-known doctor.
In 1819, he became a member of the Medical and Chirurgical Society of London, a group for doctors. He was also very interested in rocks and the Earth, so he became an amateur geologist. He was even a member of the Geological Society, a group for geologists. In 1835, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society, which is a very high honor for scientists.
Family Life
Martin Tupper married Ellin Devis Marris on August 7, 1809. Her father, Robert Marris, was a landscape painter. Martin and Ellin had five sons. One of their sons, Martin Farquhar Tupper, grew up to become a famous poet.
Later Years and Death
Martin Tupper passed away in 1844. He was at South Hill Park in Berkshire, which was the home of Edmund Pery, the Earl of Limerick. Martin Tupper was there to care for the Earl as his doctor.
